The Week Ahead - 22nd June

Date Posted: 22.06.2015

Market direction this week should be dictated by the outcome of this evening’s European leaders’ summit in Brussels where the fate of Greece is to be decided. While there has been a number of “false dawns” and deadlines so far, Eurogroup President, Dijsselbloen, believes it is already too late for funds to be released to the Greeks in order to meet its €1.5bn IMF liability at the end of the month. Despite this, European equity markets have remained buoyed as many investors believe ECB Quantitative Easing would act as a backstop for markets if Greece defaults. On the economic calendar, this week sees US inflation data, Durable Goods and Manufacturing PMIs, while in Europe, the German IFO Business Sentiment reading and Consumer Confidence are to be released. Given the uncertainties currently facing markets, we remain cautiously optimistic and use recent weakness to selectively add to positions in our preferred names.
